Confession Time
Like you, I am human and what drives everything comes down to some basic facts. Facts that I have learnt on my own journey, and the golden thread which weaves it's way through every client story -
Purpose and Meaning.
We may have a sense of what this is and if the conditions were perfect how we we would like to live, but we trade this off for what is familiar, safe and what we believe we can control.
In an age of relentless change and disruptive innovation, one might wonder why meaningful, lasting personal change seems like a mirage on the horizon.
As I delved into the workings of the human mind, I stumbled upon intriguing insights that may be the key to this puzzle.
But don’t be disheartened – the human mind is a powerful tool, and understanding it could be your first step towards harnessing its vast potential.
A belief is the story we tell ourselves and the feelings we feel
The Basic Purpose of Your Mind:
Contrary to popular belief, your mind isn't primarily wired to seek happiness. Its main goal?
Keeping you alive. This survival instinct can often prioritise short-term fixes over long-term well-being.
The Familiarity Principle:
The mind has an inherent tendency to gravitate towards what it knows. This love for the familiar can manifest as resistance to change, no matter how beneficial that change might be. A thought without purpose is just a thought.
The Energy Conundrum:
Thinking is resource-intensive. It's no surprise then that our brains are designed to find shortcuts, leading us to jump to conclusions or stick to preconceived notions.
Think about it, when you create a belief and someone disrupts that, your first port of call is to prove your belief is correct by gathering evidence.
The Childhood Blueprint:
Remember the dreams, fears, and beliefs you held as a child?
An astonishing 80% of your perceptions about yourself and the world were formed before you were eight. These early impressions often shape our adult selves, for better or worse.
A child does not have any preconceived perceptions of the world. Their whole life is shaped by the need for connection and survival and we change our nature to fit in.
The Race to the Finish Line:
In our fast-paced lives, we’ve grown obsessed with end results. But in doing so, we overlook the profound wisdom of the journey.
How can we understand our destination if we've paid no attention to the path?
Mind-Body Dialogue:
Your mind and body are in constant conversation, and they operate based on the messages you send them.
However, the interpretation can sometimes be flawed.
Feeling nervous? Your body might interpret it as excitement, leading to a surge of adrenaline. This misreading can be a stumbling block or a stepping stone, depending on your awareness.
Your body and mind are always working for you.
The Subconscious Powerhouse:
A staggering 95% of your thoughts and feelings occur beneath your conscious radar.
This subconscious programming influences decisions, reactions, and even aspirations.
So, what's the silver lining amid these revelations?
Awareness:
Understanding these principles empowers you to become the architect of your mind.
Here are some actionable insights
Embrace Change:
Recognise the inherent resistance to the unfamiliar and challenge it. Each step out of your comfort zone is a step towards evolution.
Question Shortcuts:
Before leaping to conclusions, pause and ask yourself: “Is this a well-thought-out decision or a mental shortcut?”
Revisit Childhood:
Dive into your past, not as a prisoner but as a detective. Recognise patterns and decide which ones serve you and which need reprogramming.
Cherish the Journey:
In the race to achievements, remember to savour the lessons, joys, and challenges along the way.
Tune Into Your Body:
Be mindful of the signals your body sends. With practice, you can better interpret these cues and align them with your true intent.
Harness Subconscious Power:
Coaching, Therapy, Hypnosis, Meditation, Visualisation, and Affirmations with evidence can help in tapping into and reshaping the vast subconscious realm.
Meaningful change is undeniably challenging and that is why on my own journey I have invested and still do invest in getting help to have a mirror in understanding, myself at a deeper level.
But first comes awareness, with awareness, introspection, and action, you can harness the complexities of your mind and steer your life towards a purposeful destination.
After all, you are not just a passenger of your mind, but the pilot. Happy flying!
